The house that Mita built
KYOCERA
The 1990s edition gave Mita its own chapter and its own eulogy. This one gives the company that inherited it a scoreboard: a drum rated to five million sheets, a rename that finally told the truth, and a 2026 ceramic printhead that closes the circle.
Start with the arithmetic, because Kyocera always does. Mita Industrial — Osaka’s copier-only specialist, roughly a tenth of the world market — filed for court protection in August 1998 after an administrator found the books had been dressed since the mid-1980s. The court went looking for a rehabilitation sponsor and landed on an odd-seeming fit: a fine-ceramics maker that happened to be Mita’s parts supplier. Kyocera took the trusteeship, injected roughly ¥12 billion, and in January 2000 the reorganised firm emerged as Kyocera Mita Corporation. The 1990s register closed Mita’s file as a bankruptcy. This one notes the factories kept running and the machines never stopped shipping — the rare rescue here the research department calls, briefly, a happy ending.
The rename that followed was a job-title correction, not a refresh. Effective 1 April 2012, Kyocera Mita became Kyocera Document Solutions — twelve years on, once the business had settled into selling document workflow rather than boxes, “Mita” no longer described what it did. What the rename didn’t touch was the instinct underneath it, and that instinct predates the rescue by eight years.
That instinct has a name: ECOSYS, launched 1992, back when Kyocera’s printer division had no presence in the mid-to-high end of the copier market it would later own. One component decision, repeated for three decades: replace the drum-and-cartridge consumable with a long-life amorphous silicon (a-Si) photoreceptor drum, rated up to five million sheets against roughly a million for a conventional OPC drum. Only the toner gets replenished; the drum outlives the printer. A ceramics engineer’s answer to a print-industry cost structure.
Which brings the story to its tidiest circle. In June 2026 Kyocera launched the TASKalfa Pro 15000b, a mono production-inkjet press on the same platform as its 2020/21 colour debut — fitted with what Kyocera calls a ceramic inkjet printhead. A ceramics company that rescued a copier maker on the strength of a ceramic drum is now selling a ceramic printhead. Nobody here goes home to their founding material quite so literally.

The drum that outlives the machine
Every other brand in this register sells a photoreceptor as a wear part. Kyocera sells it as the opposite: a component engineered, in its own marketing language, to have “a long product life equivalent to a printer’s life.” The amorphous-silicon drum behind that claim traces to 1992’s ECOSYS launch, eight years before Kyocera had a copier business at all, and the numbers have held up well enough to still anchor the pitch in 2026: up to five million sheets from the a-Si drum, against roughly a million for a conventional organic photoconductor and half that again for selenium. Only the toner gets consumed. Fewer cartridges, fewer service calls, and a total-cost-of-ownership argument that reads the same in a 1992 printer brochure as it does on a 2026 TASKalfa spec sheet — which is either remarkable consistency or a company that found one good idea and has spent thirty-four years refusing to complicate it.
The Mita inheritance
What Kyocera actually bought in 2000 was engineering it didn’t have: high-speed copier mechanics and a dealer network built over decades, the two things a components maker with a fledgling printer line could not have assembled on its own in any reasonable time. Mita brought the machine; Kyocera brought the drum and the balance sheet. The 2012 rename to Document Solutions was just the paperwork catching up: the TASKalfa is, in every meaningful sense, a Mita machine that learned to outlive its own drum.

Bought a bankrupt copier maker, kept the promise the drum made in 1992, and closed 2026 with a ceramic printhead. A components company that never stopped selling components — it just found a bigger box to put them in.
