TOSHIBA

Rarely first, almost never last, and the owner of the decade’s most honest model numbers.

The quiet value brand of the nineties: machines cheap to run, hard to kill, and named with a candour the rest of the industry never risked.

Every Toshiba of the era wore the “BD-” prefix, a lineage from the company’s earliest plain-paper machines. The story that BD stood for “Beauty Duplicator” circulates in dealer folklore and survives in no Toshiba source this magazine could find; we print it because it is charming and flag it because it is probably not true. In America the prefix was often dropped altogether — the BD-2060 sold as plain “Toshiba 2060.”

The anchor was the BD-2810 of 1989, a 28-cpm analog box that served well past mid-decade and is now remembered almost entirely as drum and developer part numbers in supplies catalogues — the only archaeology the record permits. Around it ran the decade’s great party trick, verified against a period EPA catalogue: the first two digits were the speed. A 2060 did 20 copies a minute, a 4550 did 45, a 9050 did 90; dealers quoted the fleet from memory. (The exception proving the rule: the BD-9240, listed at a shameless 60.)

Digital arrived as the DP series — “DP” for Digital Product, the naming department still on brand. The DP2460 debuted with 24 ppm, electronic collation in place of sorter bins, and printing via the SC-1, an external tower controller standing beside the machine — copier and computer in separate cabinets, as if unsure the marriage would take. The collation killed the sorter overnight.

On 1 January 1999 the copier business passed to subsidiary Toshiba TEC, with the e-STUDIO line waiting just over the horizon — and that is all this volume will say about the 2000s.

Finishing is rated provisionally: sorter and finisher model numbers for the BD line have essentially vanished from the web. The bins are known the way dark matter is — by their gravitational effect on invoices.

Three ways to buy a Toshiba

The range in depth — a ladder whose rungs are labelled with their own speeds.

Most ranges of the decade demand a decoder ring, a dealer lunch and an act of faith. Toshiba’s demands arithmetic: the first two digits of the model number are the copies per minute, a convention verified against a period EPA catalogue and quotable from memory. You do not so much choose a Toshiba as name a speed and let the catalogue finish the sentence.

The entry ticket

At the bottom of the ladder sits the BD-1210 — twelve copies a minute by its own admission (inferred; the machine was too small to attract documentation), platen only, no bins, no options to regret. Its quiet distinction is under the lid: it shared a drum family with the mighty BD-2810, so the church office and the two-partner practice bought small while the parts bin thought big.

The realistic entry buy was the BD-2060 — 20 cpm, ADF, sorter optional, sold in America as plain “Toshiba 2060” with the prefix quietly retired. Against Sharp’s SF-2022 of 1992 — 22 cpm and a twentieth-anniversary badge — the 2060 gave up two copies a minute and every scrap of sentiment, and answered with the house virtues: cheap to run, hard to kill.

The engine room

The middle of the range is where the naming doctrine pays out. The BD-2810 (1989) anchored it — a 28-cpm analog veteran, ADF and sorter optional, still in service well past mid-decade. Above it the BD-3560 gave 35 cpm with sorter and duplex options, and the BD-4550 gave 45 with RADF, sorter or finisher, and duplex as standard — the point on the ladder where two-sided copying stopped being a request and became furniture.

The buyers were the legal practice, the school front office, the branch of anything with a letterhead. Against Ricoh’s FT5535 — 35 cpm, the era’s unglamorous hero, sorter-stapler optional — the BD-3560 matched the speed and skipped the mystique: the Ricoh had a reputation, the Toshiba had its spec sheet embossed on the nameplate.

The summit

The top of the analog range says what it does: the “9050,” 90 copies a minute, document handler (unverified, like most things at this altitude), finisher at station. Against the Xerox 1090 — 92 cpm since 1985, the litigation and copy-shop legend, stapling 50-sheet sets — the 9050 offered two fewer copies a minute and a name that was itself the brochure.

The other summit is the future: the DP2460 with its SC-1 tower — 24 ppm digital, RADF, electronic collation instead of bins, printing supplied by the cabinet standing beside it. Slower than half the analog line and more significant than all of it.
